X-Weighted Targets Childhood Obesity in X-Weighted: Families

Thirteen courageous families engage in their own unique battle of the bulge when an all-new season of the Gemini award-winning documentary series
X-Weighted returns to Slice™ October 8. The one-hour series which was filmed in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, will air Thursdays at 8pm ET/PT.

In the most gripping season to-date, X-Weighted has switched gears to take viewers behind-the-scenes and into the homes of Canadian families to reveal critical issues contributing to our nation’s obesity epidemic in X-Weighted: Families. Statistics Canada reveals that obesity rates have almost tripled in the last 25 years and currently, 1.6 million Canadian children between the ages of 2-17 years old are overweight or obese. In addition to worrying about fitting in at school or their first kiss, obese kids are also worrying about diabetes, high blood pressure and depression.

“For three seasons X-Weighted has followed courageous individuals on their precarious weight-loss journeys as they overcome unhealthy lifestyles,” said Vanessa Case Vice President, Content, Slice™, Canwest Broadcasting. “Now, moving into its fourth season, X-Weighted: Families turns its focus to a timely issue, the childhood obesity epidemic sweeping Canada. Heartbreaking, astonishing, and occasionally shocking, this is the most compelling and inspiring season yet.”

Each emotionally charged episode follows a different family coming to terms with their hefty reality by documenting their failures and successes in their tumultuous transformation from fat to fit. Parents learn to take responsibility for their bad food choices, turn off televisions and game consoles, walk away from buffets and fast food, and drag their kids – kicking and screaming if necessary – into a healthy, active lifestyle.

“This season is a real eye opener! These courageous families have allowed us extraordinary access to their lives as they struggle to reverse years of poor nutrition and bad habits,” said Margaret Mardirossian, Executive Producer and President, Anaid Productions. “I hope their incredible honesty and perseverance inspires other families out there to embrace positive change and pursue good health.”

X-Weighted’s fitness expert, and one of Canada’s most recognized personal trainers, Paul Plakas returns this season with his trademark no-nonsense and cut-through-the-resistance observations. Plakas is joined by weight loss expert Crystal Andrus, a former 200-lb stay-at-home mom turned best-selling author and life coach. Rounding out the team of experts is obesity physician Dr. David Macklin, one of Canada’s leading physicians in the field of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Macklin shares his medical expertise with the families, dispensing advice on appropriate weight loss goals and healthy nutritional choices.
