The demise of a Hollywood sex goddess, the tragic life of Prince Charles’ forgotten former mistress, first-hand accounts from would-be assassins of Fidel Castro, and candid revelations from Wall Street insiders. These are just some of the scandalous plots and compelling stories from the August lineup of documentaries on CBC Newsworld.
Marilyn: The Last Sessions airs Sunday, Aug. 2, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on CBC NEWS: THE PASSIONATE EYE, just shy of the 47th anniversary of her death. A revealing look into the Hollywood icon’s emotionally troubled life based on tapes made during psychoanalysis sessions in the months prior to her untimely death.
In the wake of Michael Jackson’s death, rumours began swirling that an ABBA reunion might replace Michael Jackson’s London concerts. Band members recently shot down the rumours, but Benny Andersson the co-songwriter of hits such as “Waterloo” and “Mamma Mia” confirmed that half the band will take part in a tribute gig in London’s Hyde Park featuring some of the Swedish pop band’s biggest hits. Their music was performed in the long-running stage musical hit and major motion picture Mamma Mia.
ABBA: The Mamma Mia Story, airing Monday, Aug. 3, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE PASSIONATE EYE, explores the global appeal of this ultimate feel-good show.
Norm airs Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on CBC NEWS: THE LENS.

A child in the 1950s, Norm was raised in the foster-care system and separated from his sister Karen. The two are now reunited and live in Halifax. The film offers viewers a powerful example of the depth of sibling love and the challenges faced by many families. Norm is produced and directed by Teresa MacInnes and Kent Nason of Moondat Productions (Nova Scotia) in association with CBC Newsworld. It won the “Best of Festival” prize at the 2009 Golden Sheaf Awards in Yorkton, Sask.

Airing Sunday, Aug. 9, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE PASSIONATE EYE, the filmmakers explore the countless attempts to assassinate former Cuban leader Fidel Castro by tracking down some of his would-be killers.
On Saturday, Aug. 8, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, Castro: Life of Revolution offers a riveting portrait of the controversial former president of Cuba by the CBC’s Terence McKenna.

Forced to Marry follows a unique unit of the British High Commission as they carry out dramatic rescues in remote and rural Pakistan.
Cubers, airing Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE LENS, follows competitors from Canada, U.S.A., France and Israel as they compete at the World’s Rubik Cube Championship in Florida. The Rubik’s Cube—the fad toy of the 1980s—is much more than a game for the elite breed of obsessed ‘brainiacs’ who can solve the puzzle in less than 30 seconds. Cubers was directed by Richard LeBlanc and produced by Walter Forsyth for Red Cube Productions (Halifax) in association with CBC Newsworld.
Back by popular demand, a/k/a Tommy Chong: The U.S. Government v. Thomas Chong airs Sunday, Aug. 16, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE PASSIONATE EYE. a/k/a Tommy Chong examines why the U.S. war on drugs targeted Canadian comedy legend Tommy Chong (half of the famous stoner comedy duo Cheech and Chong) and busted him in a $12 million sting called “Operation Pipe Dreams” for manufacturing glass ‘bongs’. Filmmaker Josh Gilbert offers a revealing portrait of the counter-culture icon and his battle with the U.S. Justice system.
With allergy season in full swing, Allergy Planet questions whether we’re becoming allergic to the 21st Century. It airs Monday, Aug. 17, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE PASSIONATE EYE. Allergy Planet examines why cases of asthma, eczema and hay fever have tripled in the last three decades and food allergies, virtually unheard of in the past, have increased by over 500 per cent in both the U.S. and the U.K.
My Big Fat Diet airs on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE LENS. In the documentary, a primarily First Nations community in Alert Bay, B.C. goes on a diet that lets them choose bacon over pasta and whipped cream over potatoes. What sounds like the unhealthiest diet delivers some controversial results. Directed by Mary Bissell, My Big Fat Diet was produced by Bare Bones Productions (Vancouver) in association with CBC Newsworld.
In a passionate effort to reform prostitution laws, two British grannies embark on a journey to find the ‘perfect brothel’ in A Lady’s Guide to Brothels. Inside the Meltdown examines why the U.S. government didn’t see the economic meltdown coming and why it couldn’t stop it.
CBC NEWSWORLD PRIME TIME PREMIERE! - Everybody’s Children is an eloquent portrait of a year in the life of two African teens seeking asylum in Canada. Airing Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE LENS, Everybody’s Children tells the story of Joyce and Sallieu, who fled from the Democratic Republic and Sierra Leone, traumatized and now alone in Canada. With little help from the Canadian government, it’s up to organizations like the Salvation Army and Matthew House, a shelter in Toronto, to give them support. Directed by Monika Delmos, Everybody’s Children was a winner of the National Film Board of Canada’s Reel Diversity competition, an NFB initiative in partnership with CBC and CBC Newsworld.

This documentary tells the story of another vivacious blonde who fell for Prince Charles, became bitter enemies with Camilla Parker Bowles, craved attention from the media and died tragically in distressing circumstances in 1997. Although the parallels are uncanny, she is not Princess Diana but Dale Tryon, a dazzling Australian socialite nicknamed “Kanga”, who captivated the future King of England, and whose story has been virtually forgotten until now. Charles’ Other Mistress is produced and directed by Page Shepherd for Channel 4 (UK).
